Far out over the Gulf, a single bolt drops to the horizon and flushes the clouds a soft peach-pink — a calm sea, a vast bruised sky, the whole scene quietly enormous. And in the foreground, on an empty reach of sugar-white sand, two people sit facing all of it, heads bent to the small glow of their phones.
A single exposure, the sea smoothed by a long shutter, the strike caught miles offshore. What makes it a story rather than a seascape is the part that isn't looking: the most extraordinary thing on the beach happens just past the edge of two screens, and goes unseen.
