A storm cell putting on its full performance over the Gulf — branches of lightning stretched across half the sky, the water below gone silver under the flash. And on the right edge of the frame, four people perched on a lifeguard stand, watching the whole thing unfold.
A single exposure in black and white. Stripped of color, the image becomes about contrast and witness: the bright architecture of the strikes against the soft gradient of cloud, the dark line of the horizon, and the small group of figures who picked the best seat on the beach that night. The chair is meant for daytime watch over swimmers. They turned it into a balcony.
